CATF opposes federal legislation that would slash climate and clean energy tax credits
WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2811, which includes several provisions that would rescind key pieces of the Inflation Reduction Act aimed at advancing technological solutions to reduce carbon emissions.
“Today the House voted to pass a bill that would diminish the United States’ ability to address climate change and reduce air pollution,” says Evan Chapman, U.S. Federal Policy Director at Clean Air Task Force. “If signed into law, this legislation would do away with tax credits that are key to advancing carbon-free technologies, including those that advance clean hydrogen production, expand the U.S. nuclear energy fleet, and reduce air pollution from the transportation sector. These repeals would harm the economy and public health.
“The Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act are estimated to spur significant emissions reductions, but they are not enough. The United States can be a global leader on clean energy development – growing the economy, creating jobs, improving public health, advancing domestic energy security and reliability, and achieving our climate goals without sacrificing one for the other. But we need a wide array of climate solutions – including hydrogen, carbon management technologies, nuclear energy, and more – to do so. We look forward to continuing our work with both parties in Congress to advance the technologies that will drive economic growth and reduce air pollution for communities across the country.”
CATF recently released a report that found that, even with landmark legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the U.S. may still fall short of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) without further action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power, industry, and transportation sectors.
