Class VI Well Permitting

Recent policy advances in the U.S. have spurred significant expansion of investment in carbon capture and storage technologies. Carbon capture and storage provisions in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act included an expansion of the 45Q tax credit and funding opportunities for carbon capture projects. As a result, the number of announced projects in the U.S. has skyrocketed to nearly 200.

Almost all these projects will require captured emissions to be permanently stored in deep geologic formations via Class VI wells. The fact sheet below provides an overview of Class VI well permitting.
