Hydrogen in EU Industry

This graphical report highlights the current role of hydrogen in industry in the EU 27 – namely in the refining and chemical industries – demonstrating a clear and necessary uptake for any clean hydrogen produced in Europe in the foreseeable future.
Leveraging data from 2023, this report finds that the scale of unabated hydrogen being produced today, and the processes by which it is produced, presents both a challenge and opportunity for the EU to decarbonise part of its heavy industry by decarbonising existing hydrogen production.
This report aims to move the discussion beyond abstract production and consumption figures by highlighting the location of hydrogen consumers and nature of the relevant industries in each country. By doing so, it aims to shift the predominantly supply-focused debate to consider hydrogen demand centres, which currently rely on a dense network of hydrogen producers that largely use natural gas. Even if electrolytic hydrogen comes to dominate clean hydrogen production in the future, it is necessary to consider the immediate infrastructure investments (including those to decarbonise the electric grid) required to bring this diffuse supply to existing demand centres.
