UK government announces major support to curb methane through Fossil Fuel Regulatory Programme at COP29
Baku, Azerbaijan – At COP29, the UK government pledged $6.5 million in new funding to support the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s (CCAC) new Fossil Fuel Regulatory Programme (FFRP). The initiative, launched earlier this year, will offer crucial regulatory and capacity building support to up to 20 countries eligible for development assistance through mid-2027.
“Low- and middle-income countries make up two-thirds of the top methane emitters in the energy sector,” said Jonathan Banks, Director, Methane Pollution and Prevention at Clean Air Task Force. “But barriers exist for many of them to rapid development and implementation of methane policies for oil and gas methane. Providing more capacity and technical expertise will help emerging and developing economies reach their methane reduction targets, and contributions from countries like the UK are going to be essential for bending the curb on methane. Clean Air Task Force looks forward to working closely with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to make sure countries are able to fulfill their commitments under the Global Methane Pledge.”
Working on behalf of the CCAC, CATF will implement projects focused on methane abatement policies and regulations, following a rigorous assessment, approval, and monitoring process for each project. To date, FFRP is providing support to policymakers and regulators in Iraq, Ghana, and Kazakhstan, and has engaged others about enrollment into the program. Projects under the FFRP will include tailored support for capacity building, regulatory framework development, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) guidelines, and compliance.
