The use of synthetic natural gas (SNG) has been suggested as a viable means to decarbonize applications that have traditionally relied on natural gas. This method may seem appealing since it can leverage current natural gas infrastructure including transmission, distribution, and existing gas-fired systems like boilers, furnaces, and turbines. However, SNG is neither an economical nor an effective decarbonization strategy.
